Somebody is always watching!
Last week I had the honor of taking my own coach through a workout on camera as a role of being a Show up Fitness Instructor . Being an a trainer of the next generation of trainers, most of which will start in a corporate gym like I still am at Equinox I always remind them of a few things.
- Think fast
- Always be ready
- Keep the “playbook” wide open
- And someone is ALWAYS watching!
That was fun and it reminded me of a few things as we tried our best to be discreet while filming things. Didn’t end up being so discreet as I was surrounded by other members within a matter of minutes. Most of which didn’t necessarily need to workout within a few feet of me and my coach. But us trainers are the perceived “cool kids” of the gym. While trying to create a comfortable situation for both my client and the surrounding members, the above bullet points are really important.
Aspiring personal trainers listen up:
Most of you will google baseline personal training certifications. The most popular certifications won’t give you what you need to be successful as a trainer.
I’m a product of education, hard work and realistic expectations. As an instructor at Show Up Fitness where I started, I give the same back with my experience.
So why is it some important to understanding why someone is always watching?
As trainers in the corporate world we’re always on the perceived “stage”. Our gym is our stage, and we should treat it like Michael Jackson would when preparing for a concert. And if you’ve ever seen MJ prepare you’d know that he considered every detail to be extremely important. And he treated every fan in the audience as if this may be the only time they’d see him perform.
There’s a potential client out there that’s watching you with your clients, when you’re just passing through, and they’re paying attention. So be the Michael Jackson of personal trainers. Your body language matters, because somebody is ALWAYS WATCHING!
