Between client sessions I like to walk the floor and help members out. Sometimes I offer towels and clean up. Other times I offer a spot or help members set up/ break down equipment from their workouts. There are other times where I just stand in the middle of the gym and watch members workout. In my mind I’m the mayor of the gym. Although I don’t own the place I run the show. What I see amongst the member base is definitely commendable. A lot of hard working folks, very fit!

As a trainer in a corporate gym I feel like it’s my job to keep everyone comfortable working out. So even if you aren’t working out with me I’m looking out for ya!

Now if you’re just starting your fitness journey, walking into a gym like the one I work in could potentially look like a total circus. Theres lots of open floor space which allows for a lot of creativity. And thats great. All (or almost all movement) is good movement. Every modality in the gym has a place in an exercise routine for someone.

But gyms can be full of meatheads slamming weight on the ground and, influencers trying to get everyone’s attention, recording their workouts. Then there’s “Mr Important “ thats always on his phone. And here you are just trying to get started on your fitness journey.

To be fair, there are lots that love this environment, and some that love it a little less and those that hate it. As a personal trainer I fall in the middle, a person that wants to help everyone, while also getting my own workout in and seeing everyone happy, healthy and fit. So if you’re ready to start your fitness journey, here’s what I’d like to say to you:

  • The fact that you’re reading this is a huge step in its own. So kudos! It’s proof that you want these fitness goals
  • Take your time. Your workout is only yours. Go at your pace and don’t compare yourself to others.
  • Have a growth mindset. It’s ok to watch others workout, and take an idea there or there. Even I do as a trainer. Nobody knows everything.
  • Listen to your body. No one knows you better than you do. If it doesn’t feel right chances are it’s not(for you).
  • Congratulate yourself every time you show up and workout. It’s well deserved. It’s not easy sticking to a fitness regiment for the best of us. But you’re different!

Aside from that, prioritize fitness just as you would any other aspect of your life. Plan your workouts and go out there and be your best! I’ve got your back!

So what about working with a personal trainer?

Well, I’m a trainer and I work with other personal trainers all the time. I can definitely say that these are my best workouts for a few reasons:

  • Allowing someone else to organize my workout saves my mental energy, thus putting it into movement.
  • I’ll definitely push myself harder working with another fitness professional.
  • I get new ideas working with other personal trainers (growth mindset), allowing me to help my own clients better.

The gym is a place for all of us to go to and be the best, healthiest badass version of ourselves. I hope to see you in the gym soon!
